11th Annual Writes of Spring: Futurocity

The REP’s 11th Annual Writes of Spring presents FUTUROCITY Orlando, FL (March 17, 2014) – Orlando Repertory Theatre (The REP) presents the 11th Annual Writes of Spring 2014: Futurocity, April 22 & 23 at 7:00pm, adapted from the select writings of over1,400 Central Florida students and sponsored by Florida Blue. Writes of Spring is a unique writing contest designed to support literacy and promote creative expression.  It is a collaboration between Orlando Repertory Theatre, the graduate students in the UCF Theatre for Young Audiences MFA Program, and the young people from the greater Orlando community. Each year The REP accepts submissions from Kindergarten through 12th grade students. The top entries are compiled to create an original play using the students’ words and ideas. The resulting script is produced by The REP and UCF graduate students, and presented in a fully staged production at The REP. Winning writers will be honored and recognized at the performance and post-show celebration. 1,457 entries were submitted in the form of short stories, essays, and poems under the prompt, “When I look to the future, I see…”, from which 120 winners were selected. “Busytown” | Press Release

RICHARD SCARRY’S BUSYTOWN COMES TO LIFE AT THE REP!  Orlando, FL (February 10, 2014) – Orlando Repertory Theatre (The REP) continues its 2013-2014 season with Richard Scarry’s Busytown (February 20 – March 30, 2014) based on the popular book series by Richard Scarry. Lyrics are by Kevin Kling & Michael Koerner, and music by Michael Koerner. Supporting sponsors including Clear Channel Outdoor and Lowndes, Drosdick, Doster, Kantor & Reed P.A. Attorney’s at Law. As the show begins, the inhabitants of Busytown start buzzing around in their daily activities. Huckle Cat asks how they spend their time so busily. With this question in mind, Huckle Cat then takes the audience on a grand tour of his neighborhood, showing the whimsical events in an everyday Busytown. With his best friend, Lowly Worm, Huckle Cat will find out the secret to how Busytown stays so busy! Busytown runs Saturdays and Sundays from February 20th to March 30rd at 2pm and 5:30pm. Tickets are $18 for adults, $16 for students, seniors (55+), and members of the military with valid ID, and $12 for the youth (ages 3 to 17). The REP also offers special performances of Busytown. Orlando, FL (January 13, 2014) – Orlando Repertory Theatre (The REP) continues its 2013-2014 season with The Magical Adventures of Merlin (January 23 – February 23, 2014) with book, music, and lyrics by Janet Yates Vogt and Mark Friedman. Supporting partners include Turner Construction Foundation and Mears Motor Leasing. This reimagined tale explains how the young wizard Merlin meets soon-to-be king Arthur in mythical ancient England. Things become complicated when Merlin faces a choice between his quest for magic or friendship. Will Merlin choose ultimate magical power – his lifelong dream – or friendship with Arthur and Guinevere? Will Arthur pull the sword from the stone and defeat the sorceress Morgana? Can Merlin become the greatest wizard of the land? “Jackie and Me” | Press Release

THE REP PRESENTS JACKIE AND ME  A Jackie Robinson Baseball Adventure ORLANDO, FL (October 1, 2013) – Orlando Repertory Theatre (The REP) presents Jackie and Me, a powerful play by Steven Dietz based on Dan Gutman’s popular book about the history-making African American baseball player Jackie Robinson, from October 10 through November 10, 2013 in Loch Haven Park. This production is sponsored by Darden Restaurants Foundation (Presenting Sponsor) and Walt Disney World (Supporting Sponsor). Jackie and Me follows young Joey Stoshack as he travels through time by holding a baseball card. When assigned to write a paper about Jackie Robinson, he heads back to 1947 and meets the legend in person. Joey witnesses Jackie’s determination and dedication during the turbulent time of segregation and the journey forever changes Joey’s definition of courage.
