Camp Omigosh!

By Wade Bradford

Connor’s summer is off to a rough start: the camp bus almost crashes, his cabin mates don’t trust him, and the girls on the other side of the camp constantly outsmart him. But when he and his friends Tasha, Parker, and Kimberly investigate the mystery surrounding the “Ghost of Dead Billy,” they begin a hilarious adventure that is worlds away from your typical campfire story. This haunted camp comedy with a sci-fi twist has it all: ghosts, aliens, robots, plant zombies and, of course, dodgeball.

WHAT YOU NEED…

  • A quality camera with a good built-in microphone is all you need. Your cell phone might be perfect!
  • A basic tripod (or family member with a steady arm!)
  • The light source should be in front of you and not in shot. Don’t perform with an open window behind you if possible. That gives too much back lighting and your face becomes a shadow.
  • A background that is not distracting.

CLOTHING…

  • Even if you’re filming from your living room, it’s still a professional audition!
  • You don’t need to get fancy, but clean, comfortable, and camera-ready is the way to go.

CAMERA TEST…

  • Do a camera test before you film to be sure you are looking your best in the light and against the background.
  • Make sure that there is no distracting noise getting in the way of recording the audio.
  • Can you be easily heard on a laptop computer with the volume at a normal level?

FRAMING…

  • If using a cell phone, place your recording device horizontally to film in landscape mode instead of portrait.
  • If you do not move a lot in your monologue, center your waist at the bottom of the frame and the top of the frame slightly above the top of your head.
  • If you have a lot of physicality or movement, center the frame where we can see just a little bit of floor beneath your feet and the top of the frame slightly above the top of your head. Make sure you have enough width to see you at all points without needing to move the camera, but also not so far that it is hard to see your facial expressions.
  • Keep your focus out of the camera and place your viewpoint slightly to the left or right of the camera lens – don’t record your audition addressing the viewer.
  • You don’t need any “artsy” or fancy camera movements. Keep it simple!

INTRODUCTION…

  • Please state your name and current grade looking directly into the camera before you begin.
  • Be proud of who you are! This is our first impression of you!

ACTING…

  • Choose the best material for you!
  • Chose an age appropriate monologue
  • Refrain from picking a monologue that requires a dialect or accent. We want to hear your natural voice.
  • An ideal monologue would be one in which:
    • Your character is talking to another character
    • You want something for the character you are talking to
    • And you can show some sort of change or growth from the beginning to the end
  • Memorize your lines! If you mess up, stop the camera and start over, we’ll never know! We want to see your best performance, so try as many times as you need and send us your best take!
  • Speak clearly and do not rush.
  • Rehearse, out loud in front of other people before doing your tape. It will help with confidence!
  • Relax and smile. You are auditioning for a “play” not a “torture”! 😉
