We sat down with Spencer Morrow, one of Orlando’s favorite choreographers, to learn all about how he developed the choreography for our production of “Curious George: The Golden Meatball“!

How long have you been choreographing shows for The REP?
The first show I choreographed at The REP was Footloose in 2008, so I’ve been choreographing shows here for 9 years.

What kind of education or training prepared you for this career?
I received my Bachelor of Fine Arts in Acting from the University of Central Florida. I think to be sucessful as a choreographer it’s incredibly important to understand not just dance but acting as well in order to properly tell the story. I also starting working professionally as a performer when I was in high school, and since then I have worked with some incredible choreographers and I’ve taken bits that I learned from each of them and applied them to my style.

How did you approach choreography for Curious George: The Golden Meatball? Where did you go for inspiration?
Just like with any show I choreograph, first and foremost I let the music inspire the movement. This show is particularly exciting because there are so many different styles to play with. Not only is it fun for me to create, but I think it’s more fun for the actors to perform.

What is your favorite part of the musical and why?
My favorite part of Curious George: The Golden Meatball is the message. It’s so heartwarming to see what lengths George will go to for the friends he loves.

What is your favorite song from the production and why?
My favorite song from the show is “Dash of Joy.” It’s a high energy, pot clanging, kick lining song that is so fun to watch!

What are three words to describe your choreography?
Energetic, storytelling, and dynamic!
