Young Artists in the Spotlight is an Orlando Family Stage program that creates opportunities for students to respond to season shows through visual art projects. Under the direction of Renee Schneider from ArtWorks-Orlando, teens from Edgewood Children’s Ranch are our featured artists for this production.

African-American writer Richard Wright used writing Haiku to ease the stress and worry of a difficult life situation. Writing Haiku helped him appreciate the beauty of the moment and focus on the present. In Locomotion, the Play, lead character Lonnie also finds solace in writing poetry, especially Haiku.

After learning about Richard Wright, teens at Edgewood Children’s Ranch wrote their own Haikus. Next, they designed patterns inspired by Asian or African fabrics and printed wood panels to display their poetry. The panels were printed in red and black ink using Styrofoam printing plates.
