At Windermere High School, something spooky and hallowing brewed throughout the Theatre Design and Technology class. Students analyzed the script, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and were inspired to create their own visions of the world of the play. These visions became original costume, set, props, sound, and lighting designs, which students shared in 2D renderings, plans, and vision boards. Young Artists in the Spotlight is an Orlando Family Stage program that creates opportunities for students to respond to season shows through visual art projects. Participants receive free tickets for the show and their work is displayed in our lobbies for audiences to enjoy! From production design, to paintings, paper cuttings, or even 3D sculptures, the galleries are always a delight.

The student artwork from Windermere High School does not disappoint. They successfully captured the tone of the show and provided thoughtful descriptions for their design choices. Each of their designs is unique and demonstrates how many different interpretations can be drawn from one singular text. It is exciting to compare and contrast their visions from that of Orlando REP’s professional design and production team.

Orlando Family Stage is all about inspiring students this season. Programs like Writes of Spring, which bring students’ dreams to life or Youth Academy classes and productions that draw on creativity and passion, are just a few of the offerings that we hope will engage and inspire. This particular Young Artists in the Spotlight gallery reminds us that theatre requires a variety of creative individuals to bring stories to life on stage. In addition to the talented actors, playwrights, and directors, designers and production teams also work to ignite the imagination. Maya Angelou said, “You can’t use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have.” We hope Young Artists in the Spotlight does just that, sparking more creative expression and original ideas amongst our program participants and our audiences.
